Suzanne Southon - ROCKY MOUNTAIN ROAD TRIP
Over the long wekend, I went west to visit a good friend, Christine Kett. Before moving out west, Christine and I did many road trips. This trip out west was a truly memorable four day road trip. We travelled from Edmonton, bypassing Calgary and then into Banff. We spent time in the Banff area before going north to Jasper. The trip from Banff to Jasper usually takes 2 1/2 hours but we did it in 12 hours!!! So much to see and photograph. Christine had done a lot of preliminary research and not a minute was wasted.
001 Finally seeing the mountainsAs we drove around Calgary the mountains came into view beyond the rolling fields. I took this image from the car travelling along the highway. | 002 Bow FallsBow Falls was our first stop in Banff. The skies over the falls had not cleared following the only rain that we saw. | 003 Bow RiverLooking down the Bow River, the skies were clearing in the distance. |
004 Valley around BanffDriving around the Banff area, we found this wonderful spot that looked over the valley. | 005 Banff HoodoosA close-up of the hoodoos that we saw in the valley | 006 Waiting for the LightVery near to Banff is Vermillion Lake. it is a beautiful place to go for sunsets and reflections as the water is quite often very calm. |
007 Sunset at Vermillion LakeThere are many spots to take images from as there are actually three small lakes. | 008 Vermillion Lake PanoramaWe liked this spot we went there both evenings(and dinner was very late!!) I tried to take images for a panorama stitch and was happy that it came out | 009 Banff HotelAfter sunset shooting, it was up to Surprise Corner to take pictures of the Banff Hotel with the Bow River in front. |
010 Banff HotelAnother image of the Banff Hotel and the Bow River. | 011 Banff HotelFrom another spot at Surprise Corner, you get a different view of the Banff Springs Hotel | 012 Moraine LakeWe got up very early to get to Moraine Lake to catch the early morning light |
013 Moraine LakeFrom the "Rock Pile" as it is called, there are many views of the lake | 014 WildflowersNear Moraine Lake, there were some fields of wildflowers such as fireweed and paintbrush. | 015 Marble CanyonMarble Canyon is a slotted canyon that you can crisscross using a number of bridges. |

Hi Sue
Some really great shots! Many are just like post cards. Its been over 30 yrs since I have been to Banff and Jasper area and these pics make me want to go back soon. Looks like you had some great weather. Sunshine always brings out that real torqoise colour of the lakes which is what I remember the most.
Thanks for posting
Bob
