Nancy McRae's Milk Drop Sculptures
Nancy McRae's Milk Drop Sculptures
Posted by: James Cowie,29 Dec 2007 [17:36 UTC],After I saw the images MyPhotoClub member Nancy McRae posted to her gallery yesterday and numerous emails from other members asking about the technique, I emailed Nancy and asked her if she would share this technique with the rest of us. Below is her technique, thanks Nancy the shots are really cool.
“James, I would be glad to share this technique. First of all, another photographer that posted this technique on another website and then I tried it, his version was very technical and expensive. I modified it to a poor man’s version!”
Supplies: Tripod, Macro Lens, Food Colouring, Milk, White Paper Plates, 2 Table Lamps, a Small Teaspoon or for best results an eye dropper.
Camera Settings: Here is a suggested place to start, F16, Shutter Speed of at least 200th of a second, ISO set at 400. And a Flash unit, I sued the pop up built in flash, select the continuous drive mode - a remote control may be easier to use, if you have one ... I don’t, so I just pressed the shutter button myself.
Technique: Fill the paper plate with milk - depth of milk determines the force of impact which makes some really cool, random patters. Drop your food colouring in the middle of the milk - this is what I used to manually focus on. Fill your eye dropper with milk and drop it into the middle of the plate and shoot away.
Notes: Once again the height you drop your milk from will give you different patterns. Out of about 1000 shots, I had about 30 keepers. Have fun! Nancy McRae
Below are a few samples, check out all of Nancy's images in the photo gallery. Thanks again Nancy for sharing this technique. James
