Tripod Tips

The major differnces is that carbon fibre is lighter, has a better weight to weight ratio ( will hold a greater weight to its weight than a standard tripod) but the biggest difference is that it deadens vibrations more than regular steel or aluminum tripods. Carbon fibre tripods are great for travellers and heavy tripod users who are worried about how weight that thay are carrying. Sounds good right so what is the downside cost carbon fibre tripod cost a lot more than regular tripods. I just bought a new Gitzo Basalt tripod  ( which is one of the new hi tech tripods) that sells for $489.99 that is a pound light that my old Gitzo aluminum tripod and can hold more weight. The comparable Gitzo carbon fibre sells for $649.99 is  weights in at 3.2 Lbs of a pound and holds 4.5 pounds ( total weight hold is 26.5 pounds) more weight than my new one. If you want to carry a lighter tripod that can still hold a heavy lens and camera there are some very good options available now a days with carbon fibre being the lightest and strongest. Doug

Fall time lends itself to longer exposures and with that you should be using a tripod.  Here is a couple of quick tips on using a tripod.

Tip 1 - Take advantage of the heavier sections first.  If you have the option of using your tripod on a picnic table, low wall or flat rock, then don’t extend your tripod to it’s full length.  When you extend the tripod, extend the heavier bottom sections first and leave the narrower sections intact, and only roll up the centre column if you have to.  This will leave the tripod lower and much sturdier.

Tip 2 - If you are using a heavier lens invest in a tripod collar, some longer telephoto lenses come packaged with one.  With most of the longer and heavier telephoto lenses they are nose heavy and the collar will balance the camera and lens, you will be surprised at the difference reducing the vibration will make.  Have a great week shooting and I look forward to seeing you on our Fall Colours Tour on the 14th and 21st of October.   Doug Burdick ~ Stan C.
