I was asked to explain about the swirling lily technique. Ths was featured years ago in Birds and Blooms. I started doing this with my film camera.

Items needed are a tube(for over my Tamron macro lens, an empty Pringles can worked well.Thank goodness I love Pringles) and a piece of silver or gold mylar to line the can. I bought mine at Mercury Arts and Craft Store. Line the tube with the mylar and trim where necessary. I try to have a very flat seem without using too much tape.

For taking the photos, it is best to use a macro lens. Shoot with the lens wind open, as this will cut down on the focus of the end of the tube. Working with a tripod means you have a free hand to hold the tube, as well as squeezing to create various swirls.

Now that I am into digital and must deal with the 2/3 chip, one Pringles can is not long enough and so I am trying various longer lengths.

Try using the mylar to line a large funnel shaped  piece of bristol board and a different lens for more unique effects. Using a sheet of mylar as a reflector on a windy day can create some abstract images. Be sure to check your mylar image for any unwanted reflections. Here is an image of my setup and the end result using gold mylar.

I hope others will try these techniques and post their images.
