Poem of the Week: "Certain Flowers" by Gwen McEwen
some unthinking god
threw me cold violets last morning
when the rain was a prince in the garden.
said: here, define a certain fear in flowers,
chalk out quickly the peril of beauty,
said softly this, as I worried private light
among the blooms
and stretched a half-winged bird of verse
to band the prince, the bloodless blossoms.
some unthinking god
is made of towering flowers; his eye
in the tall blue tulip sky,
a profound petal there; I arrest its blooming.
I want the flowers beheaded,
the garden sink,
the rain deny its claim to princedom there
and stand in a garden of void
applauding, tracing the biographies
of brief past flowers, capturing the moment of bloom
in a cage of my own sunlight.
