Overview:
Open the image you want to convert to black and white.
Create an Adjustment Layer by going to:
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation
Click OK. this will bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog box. Now take the Saturation slider and drag it to the left to -100 to desaturate the image completely, then click OK. This creates an Adjustment Layer without altering or harming the original image.
Also by using an Adjustment Layer of Hue/Saturation we are still working in RGB Mode, we haven’t gone completely to Grayscale so we could still add color tones to the image if we would like to.
To add a color tone to your image go to:
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter
From the drop down menu labeled Filter choose any one of those colored filters to add the tone to your image.
Once you’ve finished making your adjustments, click OK.
The beauty of Adjustment Layers is that you can always go back and change your adjustments without altering the original image.
